Georges Gallet
(July 20, 1902 – March 29, 1995)
Georges Hilaire Gallet was a French journalist, translator, and editor. He was also a great collector of pulp magazines.
According to Dick Eney in Fancyclopedia 2, before World War II, Gallet was the only French stefnist known to Angloparlantian fandom. He had planned to launch a French prozine, but had to abandon the project at the onset of the war.
In The Science Fiction Fan 49 (August 1940) Olon Wiggins said
For several months I had wondered, with fear in my heart, over the fate of Georges Gallet. That had been his part in the overwhelming onslaught delivered by the hordes of Hitler? Imagine my delight recently upon receiving a lengthy letter from him. He is still in the French Army and alive after going through one of the most terrible retreats in history - only 14 men left out of his original command numbering 43. Twice mentioned in Army orders, he has been awarded a War Cross.
Voice of the Imagi-Nation 42 (May 1945) enthusiastically welcomed a February 22 letter from Gallet which began:
My last letter to you was dated 24 Sept. 1941, More than three years ago! It is a long, long way back and that period has been crowded with happenings... I won't try to tell you all It would take a book, at least, to do it.
In response, Forrest J Ackerman wrote:
Vom urges every true fan to send at least one pro[zine] – dated anywhere between '40 & the present— as a gift to Gallet, Fanmag eds, make him up a selection of your back issues.
Milt Rothman was a Sergeant in the Signal Corps and on July 24, 1945 he met Gallet in Marseille.
Gallet attended the Festivention in London in 1951 and was later a judge for the International Fantasy Award.
He published the 1954 sf anthology, Escales dans l'infini (Fantasy Ray No. 26).
