George Scithers entered fandom in 1954 and a few years later began publishing the Hugo Award-winning fanzine Amra for the Hyborian Legion. (Articles from Amra were reprinted by Mirage Press in The Conan Swordbook and The Conan Grimoire.)

He chaired the Discon, the Worldcon, in 1963, and wrote the extensive Discon 1 Report on how to run a mid-60s Worldcon. He was co-chair of the Philadelphia in 1977 Worldcon bid. He chaired Disclave 6, Disclave 7, and Disclave 8. He was a frequent chair of the WSFS Business Meeting.

In 1969, he published his first short story in If. Scithers founded Owlswick Press in 1973, and four years later, was named the first editor of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, which he left in 1986. Two years later, along with John Betancourt, Scithers re-established Weird Tales. He also worked as a literary agent and founded the Owlswick Agency.

He was a member of the Little Men, WSFA (and served as President), PSFS and LASFS, and was responsible for the Scithers SFL Hoax. He was a member of The Cult and served as OA.
