Furry fandom is a fringe fandom that revolves around anthropomorphized cartoon animals, with art, comics, fursuit cosplay, fiction and games, any of which may have sexual overtones. SF fanartists, including Taral Wayne, Ken Fletcher and Reed Waller, began this movement with comic books in the 1980s.

Furry conventions began with ConFurence 0, a dry run for the ConFurence series, held January 21–22, 1989, at the Holiday Inn Bristol Plaza in Costa Mesa, California, with an attendance of 65. The series ran through 2010. Today’s furry cons include Anthrocon, Furry Migration, Further Confusion, Midwest FurFest, and FurWAG, and the field gives out the Ursa Major Awards, the Cóyotl Awards, and the Leo Awards.
