First Fan Letter with Address
This is the first letter written to a prozine letter column giving a fan's address, a necessary baby step towards fandom, which grew out of fans finding each other in those letter columns. It appeared in the August 1927 issue of Amazing Stories.
"WANTED - A YOUNG MEN'S SCIENCE CLUB
Editor, Amazing Stories:
I have been a reader of your periodical since the first issue and greatly enjoy the columns known as "Discussions." I am pleased to note what a large number of young men are interested in science.
A number of young men and myself have started on the project of forming a Science Club and also a laboratory. It is with this in mind that we ask you to publish this letter in your column with a request that any young men interested in science and ranging from 18 to 23 years, communicate with me. If enough members are secured it will be possible to realize our project. The purpose of this association is to get the young men together and experiment and discuss any scientific subject. It will be possible from them to experiment either as an individual or in groups, all according to their own whims. It is easily seen what a wonderful thing it will be to be able to have the use of a large laboratory to work in where otherwise it is only possible to carry on small experiments because of lack of money. It is necessary to mention that those wanting to join live within a reasonable distance from, or within this city.
