Gharlane of Eddore was the (well-protected) penname of David Grant Potter of California, who was a prolific, knowledgeable, interesting, larger-than-life (and also sometimes controversial and opinionated) poster on a variety of sf-related usenet groups. And he knew everything.
He got permission from E. E. Smith, himself, to use the name Gharlane of Eddore, one of the great villains of the Lensman series and used it from September 1992 until his death. He also used the pennames Carl Kolchak, E. K. Grant and Gordon F. Shumway.
He maintained a website devoted to the Lensman saga.
