Sociologist who has published books about fandom. In 1992, she published Enterprising Women: Television Fandom and the Creation of Popular Myth and followed up with 1999's Science Fiction Culture, a study of fandom based on many years of "field work" at SF conventions. Some fans did not like it all. Others appreciated the fact that she did not treat us as anti-social weirdos. The book heavily emphasizes convention fandom; fanzines are conspicuously absent, as is fandom outside the United States.

Professor Bacon-Smith has also written four fantasy novels, including the Daemons, Inc. trilogy.
