The first BanffCon was held October 6-8, 1989 (Canadian Thanksgiving) at a lodge inside Banff National Park. The GoHs were Brian Aldiss, Vincent Di Fate, and Mike Glicksohn.

Attendance was 402 and it was run by a group of fans from Alberta working with some from Moscow, ID.

It was noted that this was the first convention anyone could remember where there was a fee to drive to the site. (People had to pay to get into the park.) The masquerade was run as a diplomatic reception -- everyone at the convention received an invitation to come dressed in the formal dress of your own planet.

There is a review by Steve Forty in BCSFAZine 198:10-11 for November 1989.
