He is married to the SF author Joan D. Vinge.

He has edited numerous prominent SF authors such as Vernor Vinge, Joan D. Vinge, Frederik Pohl, Andre Norton, Dan Simmons, Jack Williamson, and Greg Bear.

He entered fandom in his native New York, spent many years in Madison, WI, where he worked on Wiscon, and now lives in Arizona.
