Arthur Rose “Doc” Weir was a relative newcomer to fandom when he died (he was a reader with a large collection, but only discovered fandom while in his 50s) but in the short time of his involvement he was active in a number of fannish areas, and the Doc Weir Award was created in his honour.
He first found fandom through the pages of Authentic Science Fiction in 1958. He bought an old copy for his collection and found in it an address for the West Country Science Fiction Group. He wrote a speculative enquiry and while the address was out of date and the group had been defunct for some years his letter reached Eric Jones. He immediately joined the Cheltenham Group and the BSFA, becoming secretary of the latter in 1959.
His talk on 'Atlantis – A New Theory' was delivered at the Brumcon, the 1959 Eastercon, and was later printed in the June 1959 issue of Science Fantasy. At the 1960 Eastercon his talk was on Karel Čapek, a personal friend from the his time in Czechoslovakia.
