Clifton Holman Amsbury, a BArea eofan, was one of the founders of the Science Correspondence Club. According to Frederik Pohl, Amsbury was "The first organized fan anywhere." Amsbury, who was active as early as 1928, was also a convention goer and participant throughout his life. He belonged to the Golden Gate Scientific Association in 1930.
Amsbury served in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. He arrived in Spain in August 27, 1937 and returned to the US on December 20, 1938 after being wounded[1].
