Infodump

Infodump is the stfnal term for what mainstream literary critics call “too much exposition.” SF and fantasy writers are especially prone to information dumps because the creation of brand-new universes and technology often requires explanation if the reader is not to be left floundering about, wondering what’s going on.

When the infodump is part of dialogue, it may be referred to as “As you know, Bob” (sometimes initialized AYKB).

While these terms are often used to describe a writing flaw, an indigestible mass of dense text, interrupting the storyline, in skilled hands the techniques can be used with good effect.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction found infodump in use in the 1970s, but its source said it was coined even earlier.
