An article written by Damon Knight in the October 1940 issue of Art Widner's Fanfare, which called for a general fan organization to replace the fading New Fandom. This inspired members of the Stranger Club and others to form the N3F.
The title itself was a play on the over-the-top speech Mutation or Death! and the old motto "Unite or Die!"
