He had mental health issues and for a number of years was confined to the high-security UK psychiatric hospital Broadmoor; his address there was published several times in 1970s issues of Checkpoint, in his capacity as British agent for WSFA Journal. He wrote letters to many fanzines and announced further changes of address in Ansible, eventually to a non-hospital location in 1985.
