A long piece of [[fiction]], usually published in a [[book]] by itself or serialized in a [[prozine]].  In the [[Hugo rules]], the [[Best Novel Hugo]] applies to any story of more than 40,000 words.

While the most prominent form of [[science fiction]] was once the short story, novels have predominated since at least the 1960s.
