Neeping, from the onomatopoeic neep-neep, refers to gabbing about computers and associated technical subjects, particularly the long, intense, detailed discussions about hardware and software that tend to develop among techies at convention room parties, often incomprehensible (or merely mind-numbing) to the less cyber-focused. The noun form is neepery .

The term reportedly originated at Caltech in the 1970s, but spread widely through fandom without becoming so ubiquitous in the macrocosm. Like smoffing, it then extended to similarly technical conversations about other topics, as in the wonderful phrase, “WSFS neepery.”
