Standlee is a SF fan and convention organizer.

He attended his first SF convention in 1984, the World Science Fiction Convention in Anaheim.

Later he co-chaired the 2002 Worldcon, ConJosé, in San José.

He's currently on the Board of Directors of San Francisco Science Fiction Conventions, Inc., the non-profit corporation that hosted the 2002 and 1993 Worldcons and CanSMOF, the non-profit corporation behind the 2009 Worldcon.

He is also Chairman of the World Science Fiction Society's Hugo Awards Marketing Committee.
