(March 18, 1961 --)

James Davis Nicoll is a prolific reviewer from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, of SFF fiction, nonfiction, and games. In an earlier incarnation, he ran a hobby shop for 17 years. In addition to being a first reader for the Science Fiction Book Club, he created the features Young People Read Old SFF and Old People Read Young SFF, and he has posted an estimated 6,600 reviews during his career on his blog and at Tor.com. He has been a finalist for the Best Fan Writer Hugo 3 times, and has been longlisted for that award a further 6 times.

Nicoll is notorious for his decades-long history of unlikely injuries and accidents, but he insists that the Hawaiian volcano was "probably a fluke". He is also well-known for two epigrams:

The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary. -- rec.arts.sf.lovers, 1990

Whenever I find my will to live becoming too strong, I read Peter Watts.
