Harold E. “Hal” Shapiro, a 1950s and ’60s Midwest fan, was founder of the BSAW and one of the founders of the Michigan Science Fantasy Society. He was a member of the CFG and attended some of the earliest Midwestcons.

His publishing house was Outhouse Publications, and he edited and published Ice, Hallucinations, Halberd, Harlan Ellison: The Man, The Writer, and AJ1736. He also edited a STF and FSY Songbook in 1960.

In the ’50s, he claimed to have the Second Largest Collection of porn in Detroit.

He was a member of FAPA and SAPS. He was originator of the First World Invitational Convention (InVention), in Minneapolis in 1952. He ran for TAFF in 1956.
