Harold E. “Hal” Shapiro was a Midwest fan who was founder of the BSAW and one of the founders of the Michigan Science Fantasy Society and a member of the CFG and attended some of the earliest Midwestcons.

He was owner of Outhouse Publications, and edited and published Ice, Hallucinations, Halberd, Harlan Ellison: The Man, The Writer, and AJ1736. In the ’50s, he claimed to have the Second Largest Collection of porn in Detroit.

He was a member of FAPA and SAPS. He was originator of the First World Invitational Convention (InVention), in Minneapolis in 1952. His first wife was Nancy Moore. He ran for TAFF in 1956.
