Fred Hunter

Fred Hunter was a UK fan from the Shetland Islands in Scotland active from 1958 to the mid 1960s and perhaps later. His address in Lerwick means he was likely the northernmost British fan at the time. Who's Who in Science Fiction Fandom (1961) said he was corresponding with mostly British fans by tape and letter. He was a member of the BSFA from 1960.
He contributed five issues of a fanzine Outpost to OMPA between March 1962 and September 1963 and occasionally wrote for an to other titles including Orion. He may have co-produced the single issue Berserk!!! with Ken Cheslin and Archie Mercer in 1964, again for OMPA. He placed ninth in the Skyrack Poll for best British fanwriter in 1962 and sixth in 1963. In Yandro #131, Buck Coulson said:
Fred writes the sort of light humor that I appreciate; he's seldom mentioned in the same category as John Berry, Colin Freeman and Walt Willis, but I think he’s just as funny.
He doesn't seem to have attended any conventions but Skyrack #63 (February 1964) reported that he had recently visited Ron Bennett in Liverpool.
In 1961 he was employed as a bookkeeper in a shipbroker's office. His other interests included hi-fi, jazz, and playing guitar.
