“The Desert of Indifference” refers to one difficulty new, unknown faneds may face upon launching their first fanzines. Jophan gets across it in The Enchanted Duplicator with help from the Subrs.
More broadly, it represents what neofen may expect from fandom until they prove themselves. This often leads to disillusionment.
