Dean McLaughlin

Dean Benjamin McLaughlin, Jr. is an American SF fan and writer. He is the son of astronomer Dean B. McLaughlin.

He lived in Ann Arbor for a time and was involved in local fandom, was a member of the Misfits, and was on the Detention (the 1959 Worldcon) committee.

His best-known work is the novella "Hawk Among the Sparrows" (1968), which was nominated for the 1969 Best Novella Hugo as well as a Nebula. It concerns a late-20th century fighter plane which travels through time, and tries to contend with World War I aircraft.

Other works include Dawn (1980), a novel inspired by Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall." He had an excellent novella, "Tenbrook of Mars," in the July/August 2008 issue of Analog.
