He is a member of the Mythopoeic Society for which he has been editor of the magazine Mythprint, awards administrator, member of the board of directors, and chair of the annual conference. He organized The Northern Kingdom and is a member of the Little Men. He was a member of ALPS, the American Tolkien Society, and Elanor.

He has also written a large number of books reviews and compiled bibliographies and reader guides to the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and other Inklings.
