He was a past Fan GoH at Conspiracy I, New Zealand Natcon 18 and was a 2009 nominee for the Sir Julius Vogel Award. He ran for, but lost, FFANZ for 1989 and 2004.

He belonged to Aotearapa for 25 years and was OE from 1986-1987 and 2001-2003. He also belonged to ANZAPA. His fanzine was Panopticon for which he did paintings and color graphics. McCarthy's skills as a fanartist were widely appreciated.
