A subgenre of science fiction, typically dark, that focuses on biotechnology, genetic engineering and biological warfare.

Czech writer Eva Hauser coined the term about 1991, in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union. According to the review of her fanzine in BBR 19 (Summer 1991):

In Wild Sharkaaah #2, Eva asks what use is cyberpunk in a country where you can’t even find a functioning public telephone box. In an attempt to define a literature more appropriate for her country, she comes up with Biopunk, where mutants, genetic diseases and chimeric organisms take the place of computers, programs and viruses.
