Asinine Teenagers

Fandom has always been multigenerational, and most older fans welcome youth. Yet fanhistory has been continually punctuated with times when an older, more reserved contingent of fen has looked askance at some of the activities of younger, newer fans, particularly those whom they deem as self-aggrandizing, unwilling to pay their dues or lacking in respect for their elders. The specific phrase "asinine teenagers" was employed by Boyd Raeburn to describe Harlan Ellison and the self-proclaimed Seventh Fandom of 1954, but conflicts between fannish generations continue.
