Archie Mercer, a British fan was a member of OMPA (and OE) and BSFA (founding treasurer and first editor of the BSFA Bulletin, editor of Vector). He was mainly active in the 1950s and ’60s.
Mercer published OMPAzines, wrote conreports, and attended many cons in England.
He is known in fandom today primarily for his many fanzines, some edited/published with the help of his wife, Beryl Henley Mercer, who died in 2004. The Mercers met in the early 60s, when Beryl published an article in Charles Platt's Point of View {or was it Beyond?} on new fans' gripes about the BSFA; the opposing viewpoint was written by one Archie Mercer.
His fanzines included Anglofanac, Mercatorial Annual (with Beryl Mercer), The Middle Earthworm, The Once and Future Worm, Pertinence. He also wrote the fannish novel, Meadows of Fantasy.
He published numerous titled for OMPA, including: Amble, Antwerpse Letterkundige En Wettenschappelijke Gazet, Great Irish Rift Valley Expedition, Schnerdlites Hole-Boring Supplement, Second Saturday After the First..., Tales from the Oubliette.
He won the second Doc Weir Award in 1964. He (absentmindedly) created Mercer's Day. He may have been made a Knight of St. Fantony at Kettering in 1957. He was a member of Kinkay Fandom.
As well as fanzines, he wrote a fannish novel, Meadows of Fantasy
He was on the committee of Yarcon and, with Beryl, handled publications for Briscon.
