The 1958 Open ESFA was held March 2, 1958. The GoH was Robert Heinlein -- who was only rarely heard at fannish events -- who voiced his alarm the the US's educational system and the lag in scientific progress. Cyril Kornbluth (who tragically died less than three weeks later) made his last contribution to fandom by harshly criticizing Henry Kuttner's pot-boiler. This shocked many fans because (ironically, as it turned out) Kuttner has dies less than a month previously.
