Void

Void was a fanzine launched in 1955 by brothers Jim and Greg Benford while their family was living in Germany; after #13, Jim dropped out. Starting in 1959, there was a changing series of co-editors, though the actual publishing chores were taken on by Ted White, who joined as co-editor with issue 14. By 1961, Terry Carr and Pete Graham had joined, and Carr merged his fanzine Gambit with Void in the form of a column. During this period, Void became one of the best genzines being published.

The fifth anniversary issue, dubbed the VANNISH, was so large it had to be mailed in three installments. After a half-year pause, there followed issue #23, called the Willish or, more officially, the Special Walt Willis Appreciation Issue. It launched the Tenth Anniversary Willis Fund that resulted in Walt and Madeleine Willis going to Chicago for the 1962 Worldcon, ten years after Walt's first trip to the U.S.

The end came suddenly. Issue #28 was published in early 1962, and then nothing for five years. Ted White, who had been producing the fanzine from his Towner Hall apartment and mimeo shop in Manhattan, moved to Brooklyn, and became involved in other fanac. The final issue, #29, was published by White in 1967.
