Science-Fiction Chapter
The Science-Fiction Chapter, 'a fan organisation open to all interested in Science Fiction and Fantasy'[1], was a club in the Buckinghamshire area formed around 1955. It was sometimes referred to by its members as The Sci-Fi Chapter. Its official organ was Catalyst and the editor and general secretary was Ewan Hedger. Bill Harry was art editor and Neville Brock was listed as 'contact and librarian'.
The first issue of Catalyst appeared in the Cytricon II combozine and explained the club's origins. Brock had written to Authentic Science Fiction seeking fans in the Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire area interested in form in a club. The brief letter appears in #58 (June 1955). He received a reply 'from another local fan' (likely Hedger) and they met up and soon acquired a third. They also attracted fans from other parts of the country as 'postal' members. They decided to produce a 'fan-zine' to act as a link between the scattered members. They planned a range of activities and established a library.
The first full issue of Catalyst appeared in 1957. There is no evidence that there were any more or of what happened to the group although Hedger remained active in fandom into the 1960s.
