Searles had contributed to The Fantasy Fan in 1935 and in August 1939 he became associate editor of The Science Fiction Fan. According to Sam Moskowitz in The Immortal Storm, 'Under his aegis tho quality of the material, reproduction and illustrating all took a remarkable upward turn'.

During the Second World War he was a Captain in the US Navy Air Corps and contributed to Futurian War Digest in the UK. He was made an honorary member of the BFS 'in recognition of the splendid help [he has] given British fandom during the past few years'.
