This is difficult to research; the fannish record clearly shows he was reported alive and well in early 1945, which seems to eliminate Earl McKinley Kay (March 12, 1923–December 25, 1944), even though he was also born in Virginia. But I haven't seen any official records of an Earl Kay who died in 1945. It's possible this was a pseudonym, I suppose; if he had legally been named something like Joseph Earl Krankheit, we wouldn't find those records too easily.
