I've asked Rob Hansen whether the THEN listing of Martin Pitt as 1972 winner could be a slip of the mind for Jim Pitts, who all other sources suggest was the 1972 winner for his Balthus 2 artwork. --Dave Langford (talk) 00:46, 10 September 2023 (PDT)

Further research traces the Martin Pitt identification to Archie Mercer's news column in Vector. The following appeared in Vector 63 and strongly suggests that Martin Pitt was an error:

"BSFA news edited by Archie Mercer

"ERRATUM ? This column recently identified the winner of the Ken McIntyre Award for fanzine artwork at the 1972 Convention as probably being Martin Pitt. This may indeed be the case. However, the column was working at the time from somewhat vague data, and it is now apparent that the probable winner was a certain Jim Pitts. Nobody has actually corrected the column on this point — perhaps someone would care to confirm the winner's identity?"

Ah, great work, it would have never occured to me to check the Vector. I expect we can leave out the dubious 2001 as well now; it is recent enough that any actual win would leave enough evidence. --JVjr (talk) 13:58, 10 September 2023 (PDT)
