James Sawyer Winchell “Red” Avery, a Virginia fan active in the 1950s and ’60s, published the fanzine Errr! and wrote articles for other zines. He was on the SAPS WL.

Red, the son of early fan Jim Avery, was born in Needham, MA, in 1947. He attended Virginia Wesleyan College. He married Evelyn Montgomery in 1971 but she divorced him in 1975 with no children. In 1986, he lived in Atlanta. By 1999, he was living in Pennsylvania, and had two sons, Brian and Matthew, according to his father’s obituary. In 1965, Harry Warner wrote in a loc to Algol 9:

Jim later collaborated with a non fan on his first son, who is Redd Avery, who produced one issue of his own fanzine and has been represented by a few articles in fanzines in recent years.

We haven’t turned up any fanac after the mid-60s.
