(September 1928 – July 4, 1960)

Norma Hemming, 1956.

Norma Kathleen Hemming was a UK-born Australian fan and Australia’s first significant female science fiction writer. She was one of the first female members of the Futurian Society of Sydney, joining after the first Australian sf convention in 1952.

She was a contributor to and editor of Vertical Horizons, a fanzine aimed at femmefen, named for its associated club. She wrote and performed in a series of fannish plays performed at Australian Natcons from 1954–58 by the SF theatrical group The Arcturian Players.

After immigrating to Australia in 1949, she began publishing sf, usually as N. K. Hemming, with "Loser Take All" (Winter 1950/1951 Science Fantasy). Under the name Nerina Hilliard, she also wrote romance novels. Some of her work is collected in Dwellers in Silence: Stories and Plays edited by Toby Burrows (The Hilliard Press, 2010).

The Norma K. Hemming Award is named in her honor.
