Ignatius Frederic Clarke was a British Intelligence officer during World War Two, and Professor of English (from 1964) at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. He received the Pilgrim Award in 1974 and the Pioneer Award in 1998, one of only three people to win both awards.
His first major publication was The Tale of the Future: From the Beginning to the Present Day (1961), a bibliography in several editions. This work was very useful but far from comprehensive. Later he wrote Voices Prophesying War (1966), a study of the future war sub-genre, and The Pattern of Expectation 1644-2001 (1979).
Clarke also published an 8-volume anthology of British Future Fiction 1700–1913 (2001).
