Peter S. Beagle
(1939 --)
An American pro writer specializing in fantasy. His best-known work is The Last Unicorn. He won the 2006 Best Novelette Hugo, and a movie for which he wrote the screenplay was nominated for the 1979 Best Dramatic Presentation Hugo.
In 2019, he won judgement of $332,500 for financial elder abuse, fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and defamation against his ex-manager Connor Cochran. Mr. Cochran won on two other counts, and immediately appealed the four he did not. That appeal is still active at this time and no decision has been reached. Meanwhile, it should be noted that the cost of defending himself against Mr. Beagle's lawsuit forced Mr. Cochran into personal bankruptcy in 2018. Because of this, to preserve Mr. Beagle's right to collect this judgment (IF the Court of Appeals does not reverse it), his attorney, Kathleen Hunt, needed to file a nondischargability petition with the bankruptcy court. She missed four deadlines and ultimately failed to file any of the required paperwork, at all, with the result that the state of California closed Mr. Cochran's personal bankruptcy in December 2018 with full discharge. This means that even if the Court of Appeals sustains the judgment, Mr. Beagle can never collect any of it from Mr. Cochran, ever. Under the rules, though, if the judgment IS sustained by the Court of Appeals, then Mr. Beagle can collect all the money from his own attorney's professional liability insurance carrier by suing her for malpractice.
