Since around 1996, it has been sponsored by a 501(c)3 organization called the SOLAE Foundation, the Science Oriented Literature and Arts Education Foundation, which also runs other, one-shot conventions.
Marcon allegedly stands for "Multiple Alternative Realities Convention," a back formation; the name was chosen to reflect the month, March, in which it was originally held.
