Campbell Award Smackdown[edit]
Held on May 30, 2004, at WisCon 28, this event began with Ellen Klages offering up the sponsorship at the James Tiptree Award Auction. Jay Lake bought the sponsorship rights and announced that the Campbell Award Smackdown between himself and co-Campbell nominees Tim Pratt and David D. Levine would take place on Sunday at 1:00 outside the dealer's room.
The battle royale took the form of full-contact Rock-Paper-Scissor using pool noodles and lasted for three rounds before Levine subdued his adversaries by deploying the Pool Noodle Scissor of Doom. Although Levine was declared the winner by the judges, Lake would go on to win the Campbell later that year, and create the Campbell tiara and pin.
