This book had several original plot elements, and became something of a cult classic among students in the 1960s.

Stranger quickly came to hold a slightly ambiguous position in the hearts of fans since it was adopted almost as gospel by some of the odder members of the hippie and counter-culture communities (and may even have played a role in inspiring Charles Manson, although Manson has denied having read the book.) And in later years many fans saw a degree of prefigurement in Stranger of Heinlein's later awful books.
