Created in 1995 by Steven H Silver, Evelyn Leeper, and Robert B. Schmunk to recognize excellence in alternate history writing. Each year awards are presented at Worldcon or NASFiC for long form (novels/series) and short form. Occasionally a lifetime achievement award has been given.
Over the years, the number of judges has varied from three to seven, with judges coming from the US, UK, South Africa, and Canada.
The award is named for Murray Leinster's short story "Sidewise in Time." Leinster's daughter and granddaughter have attended some of the award ceremonies.
