The British Fantasy Awards are presented annually by the British Fantasy Society to honor the best fantasy works of each year.

The award for best novel was established in memory of United States writer/editor/publisher August Derleth (who in 1971 proposed that the new BFS award it), with the physical award consisting of a statuette of the god Cthulhu (from the works of Howard P. Lovecraft).

The first August Derleth Award for best novel went to Michael Moorcock for his The Knight of the Swords in 1973.
