John Gunn

John Gunn, sometimes known as Jaygee, was a UK fan from Nottingham active in the 1940s and early 1950s. He was a member of the Science Fantasy Society and he edited Booklist, the official organ of the British Fantasy Library (BFL).

When the BFL launched in 1946, Booklist was edited by BFL founder Ron Holmes. He was hospitalised and in early 1948 dropped out of fandom altogether, passing the title to Gunn who continued to produce issues during that year. In September 1948 Walt Willis contacted Gunn to ask about distributing Slant alongside Booklist. Gunn didn't reply although Booklist continued to appear. Eventually Willis wrote to Gunn offering to mail Booklist (and Slant) himself and on Christmas Day 1948 receive a parcel with 200 copies of the December issue and what Gunn's covering letter described as 'the only copy of the Directory of Anglo-fandom in existence'.

Gunn did put out at least one further issue of Booklist in May 1949 but Operation Fantast #1 in July reported that:

John Gunn is still looking for someone to lift from his shoulders the responsibility of the BFL ... what about it SFS members?

Science Fantasy News #10 (Christmas 1951) included an article from Jim Donaldson saying the book library had been passed to him along with that of the defunct Cosmos Club.

Gunn worked as the manager of a hotel in Nottingham. The tenth issue of Science Fantasy Newsalso included a change-of-address, saying he'd be running his own guest house in the same city.

In the 1950s he was more active in boys' paper fandom and collecting than in SF fandom.
