Brian Michael Stableford was a British SF writer with a Ph.D. in Sociology. He was the author of over 100 novels, 28 collections and numerous shorter works. He occasionally used the pseudonym Brian Craig. Additionally, Wikipedia lists over 300 works that he translated, predominantly from French.
Stableford was listed as a new member of the BSFA in Vector #28 (September 1964). He was member #500.
A few months earlier the Association had launched its Printing And Distribution Service (PADS). The first mailing went out around June 1964. The fifth in January/February 1966 included Proteus from Tom Jones and Stableford. Further issues of Proteus appeared in the sixth (June 1966) and seventh (September 1966) mailings. There were three more mailings without Jones and Stapleford and PADS fizzled out around the end of 1967. The British Fanzine Bibliography says there was a fourth issue of Proteus in January 1967. It's not in the PADS index so presumably it was distributed outside PADS.
Additional fanzine contributions at this time include Eclipse #2 (David Copping, Summer 1966) with a story and a poem; Grimwab #3 (Harry Bell, November 1966) with a story; and Plinth #2 (Mike Ashley, October 1967) with an article about Famous Fantastic Mysteries. Stableford also wrote reviews for Peter Weston's Speculation from #17 in February 1968.
His first novel, Cradle of the Sun, was published in 1969.
