The Purpose of Science Fiction was a single-issue fanzine produced in two editions by Douglas W. F. Mayer for the Science Fiction Association (SFA). It contains the text of a speech given by Mayer at the Second British Convention in London in 1938. The second edition was published by the CPASF in New York in June 1939 and ran to eight pages. The existence of the first is only implied by the second but clearly can't pre-date 1938.
