Mary Dew, along with her husband George Dew, hosted the meetings of the the UK’s first SF club, the Ilford Science Literary Circle, at their home 32 Thorold Road, Ilford from 1930-1. Wally Gillings felt they weren't fans as such, but rather '... a middleaged couple who without quite realising what it was all about were willing to lend their front parlour so long as the group enlivened their Monday evenings'.
