The 1956 Best Book Reviewer Hugo was presented September 3 at NyCon II. This third year of the Hugos there was for the first time a shortlist of nominees, with the winner selected by voting by the members of the convention.
This category was awarded for this one year only and it's unclear wither it was technically a Hugo. At the time, the Hugo rules were not codified and each Worldcon made up its own rules and award trophies. Nycon II announced the contents of the final ballot for the "Achievement Awards" listing the categories, ending with "Special Recognition Award -- Best Science Fiction Book Reviewer." Was this intended to indicate that this was not a Hugo or that it was a one-time Hugo? It's possible no one left alive can say for sure.
Winner: Damon Knight
Runners-up (not in order):
- Henry Bott
- P. Schuyler Miller
- Anthony Boucher
- Groff Conklin
- Villiers Gerson
- Flord Gale
- Hans Stefan Santesson
