British fan introduced to fandom through OUSFG in the late 80's. He describes himself as probably more a science fan than an SF one, with interests in Xenobiology, worldbuilding, spaceflight and the like as they appear in SF. Based in London, involved in programming for various cons, including Conine, Illumination, Mancunicon and the science programmes at Intersection, and Loncon 3 with Dave Clements.

He went to RSFG meetings when in Wokingham, and DASFA when in Colorado, and still goes to the Jomsborg in Exile book group and the London Circle.

He was one of the editors of Fancyclopedia 3 for 3 years, and redesigned the site when porting it to mediawiki, but left the project in 2020 over disagreements over software, design, quality and communication. Much of his design has now been deleted or compromised.

He ran Earth Calling Biscuit Barrel, the UK's first electronic APA.

He runs the Fannish.info aggregation website.

A British award for the best fanzine art named after British fanartist Ken McIntyre. It was first awarded in 1971, apparently organized by Rog Peyton. It is unclear when (if) it ceased to be awarded.

It seems to have had a fraught history. There was an online discussion in 1998 and Bridget Hardcastle posted:

We tried to administer the Ken MacIntyre award at the 1996 Eastercon. Both the original and the published form of the artwork need to be displayed, and must be judged by a panel of five people including (I think - my brain is being severely dredged at this point) a con committee member, a Knight of St Fantony, a member of some other group (either Brum, BSFA or FoF [ Friends of Foundation?], I forget) and two other people chosen in an arcane manner.

Later, Bernie Peek posted
The Ken MacIntyre award is in an even worse state. It wasn't mentioned in the con publications this year [1998] and wasn't awarded. The award was originally intended to be for fanzine art. The conditions laid down for choosing the recipient makes it very difficult to administer. Because it's theoretically possible to meet the conditions, no Eastercon feels that it has the authority to change the rules.

In 1989 the rules were reported as:

The Ken McIntyre award is given for the best fanzine artwork of the year. All pieces of art must be nominated in advance. Both the original artwork and a published copy must be on display at the con. The winner is chosen by a committee that consists of:

1) A BSFA nominee,
2) A Knights of St.Fantony nominee,
3) The convention committee nominee,
4) Rog Peyton (or proxy),
5) A.N.Other.

In the event that any of these members is not available, then the remaining members of the Ken McIntyre award committee may select others to make up the number.

...this all seems pretty complicated...
BECCON was a series of three biennial conventions for the London region (held in Basildon). It then became the UK national convention in 1987 as that year the rest of British fandom needed to be free to organize Conspiracy '87.

BECCON stands for the Basildon Essex Center CONvention which then became Basildon Essex Crest CONvention as the venue hotel changed its name. For the Eastercon it became the Beccon EasterCon CONvention.

Following the conventions, the BECCON team spun out a number of long-lasting ventures. Roger Robinson created Beccon Publications, whose books have been nominated a number of times for a Best Non-Fiction Book Hugo. Jonathan Cowie with Graham Connor and other scientists and engineers continued with The Science Fact & Fiction Concatenation news and reviews zine that was launched at the 1987 BECCON.

Eurocon, or formally European Science Fiction Convention, is a moveable con organized under the auspices of the European Science Fiction Society, where the European SF Awards are voted and presented. It has increasingly tried to emulate the Worldcon and the WSFS, with site selection two years in advance but by "National Delegates". During the Cold War, much effort was given to alternate both sides of the Iron Curtain; this was maintained during the Eurocon heyday ca 1990–2010, simply due to purchasing power. A traditional part of the opening and closing ceremonies is displaying the original ESFS flag and then passing it to next year's organisers.

The first Eurocon was held in Trieste, Italy, 1972 and further ones followed biannually, leaping odd years until 1983 and 1987, becoming annual ever since (except 1998). To complicate the fanhistory, at the 1980 Eurocon 5 (or V – roman numerals were more official back then) it was decided to include retroactively in the counting the First International SF Convention in Zurich, Switzerland, August 1959 (not to be mistaken for the alternate title of the 1951 London Festivention!), so the 1982 follow-up became "Eurocon 7", skipping 6 and bringing much bad luck (after THREE standalone bids/committees folded or backed out, main events were moved to a sercon German con at several weeks' notice). This caused some confusion in the 1980es (not to mention the 2010es Wikipedians, counting backwards without bothering to read the period newszines); however, around 1984 such a form of serial numbers was largely well-lost to "Eurocon YEAR", or other event name.

(To confuse the matters even more, "EUROCON" – usually capitalised – is also the European convention of the wikipedia:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, started in 1971. They own many domains in the form of eurocon20XX.com.)

The ESFS Statutes also allow "organising", or rather bestowing a title of "European Science Fiction Conference (Euroconference)", apparently to provide some recognition as well as stimulus to other events with international programming beside the year's single Eurocon, or to offset the travel/financial difficulties it might pose for a part of potential constituency (compare US zoning and NASFiC, but unlike it, clashing terms are prohibited); however this has been used only exceptionally.

The series of British Filk Conventions don't have a unifying name, and each one is started with a new committee (though they are mostly drawn from a larger continuing group of people), but they have continued regularly each February since 1989.

The names of the conventions have, except for the first (Contabile), involved a play on words on the convention's ordinal number. The convention has retained contabile.org as its domain name in spite of the changing names.

The convention's main concert presents short performances by many different participants. There is a fund which is administered by a continuing group to bring an overseas filker to the British Filk Convention each year. The Sams Awards are issued at the convention, but are administered by a different group of people than either the convention committee or the overseas guest fund.

Footloose Filker has been category of guest starting with #20 in 2008. Exactly what the criteria are is not clear.

NASFiC, the North American Science Fiction Convention, was added to the Worldcon Constitution in the mid 1970s. It was intended to legitimatize the inevitable major convention in North America when the Worldcon was held in other parts of the world, without encouraging the development of an American natcon, which would inevitably become a competitor to Worldcon.

The first NASFiC was held in Los Angeles in 1975 when the first Aussiecon was in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The second NASFiC ('79) was in Louisville, Kentucky in 1979 when Brighton, England was selected for the Worldcon. The name "NASFiC" was coined by Tony Lewis.

(Did you mean a Melbourne, Wisconsin or New York convention?)

Eastercon is the annual British National Science Fiction Convention. It has been held over the Easter weekend every year since 1955, but the sequence is considered to start from 1948 with conventions held over the Whitsun weekend except for Loncon in 1949. (The 1944 Eastercon which was held on Easter was not an Eastercon and doesn't count! Do not ask Pat McMurray about this subject!)

Eastercon attracts 800–1,200 fans of Science Fiction, Fantasy and similar genres.

There are no official rules and regulations for the Eastercon. To call your convention an "Eastercon" there has to be a general consensus that a bid has been put forward and approved by the membership at a previous Eastercon.
