An American SF writer born in London who moved to Boston in 1977 to work for DEC, publishing his first novel Inherit the Stars the same year. After becoming a full-time writer he moved first to Florida and then to California. His writing was predominantly hard SF. In his later years he developed a deplorable taste for nutty pseudo-science and Holocaust denial.
