George Tullis

(January 3, 1919 – December 15, 2002)

George R. Tullis, an early LA and Chicago fan, attended meetings of the LASFL by 1937. At a meeting in 1938, he and T. Bruce Yerke entertained the club by performing a concert on 10-cent fifes.

He returned to the Midwest in time to serve as recording secretary for Chicon, the 1940 Worldcon. He also attended Denvention in 1941, Philcon in ’47 and Discon in ’63. During World War II, he married Hellen Nagy, who also attended the latter two Worldcons.

Born in Illinois, George attended school in Lafayette, Indiana. He briefly lived in Los Angeles in the late '30s. George enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939, and for a time was stationed on the Hollyhock at Milwaukee’s Lighthouse Depot.

He met his wife at Columbia University, according to an article in the Washington Post (January 12, 1947). Hellen, who was nearly blind, required the aid of a reader for her studies. George volunteered for the job and, after finishing her required reading, went on to read fantasy to her.

In 1946, he took an extended leave and the Tullises took a road trip around the country, among other things, visiting LASFS. By 1948, they were living in Baltimore, according to the membership rolls of the N3F, and he seems to have spent his subsequent career there.

George and Hellen eventually moved to Florida where he died in 2002.
